- Dog's Original Name: Liam
Liam is a purebred neutered male, born October 8, 2013. He was purchased from a breeder as a pup by a single older gentleman to whom he was very bonded. His owner was rather ill, so Liam has not had any obedience training except "sit".
The gentleman passed away in October and Liam was alone for a few days before they were found. He has been in foster care for a month now and has been an absolute gem!
Here are some words from his foster home:
"We are doing regular obedience training and incorporating what he is learning into everyday activities. He is sitting on command, is doing well with down, heel, come. He sleeps on his Sherpa blanket beside our bed at night. We had started to let him on the bed for short periods, but Liam quickly decided it was his right and would not get down without us physically moving him amid a lot of growling and snarling. So we have cut out bed permission completely. He will go into his crate on his own to rest during the day, so we know he is not afraid of it. We don't close the door.
All time outside is on a leash, so we do lots of walks, long and short. Usually we walk about 1.5 to 2 hours a day. He is good on leash, has learned mostly not to pull. A day or two a week he gets to play loose with a neighbour's dog in their fenced yard.
Liam needs a family where someone is home most of the time (not a working family where he will be left for the day). He shows some separation anxiety but he is young and should adapt well in a new stable home. It would be best if Liam is the only animal in the home, at least for now, until he gets settled. A home with an existing dog should be of opposite sex and they should have an opportunity to meet before adoption. He has not been tested with cats. A fenced yard is a must, or a regular walking routine to meet his young energy levels.
Other Dogs: Maybe
Liam is friendly with other dogs and loves people, including small children. Our granddaughter talks to him and he follows her around. He still seems a bit nervous around dogs, sniffs them and then moves away as soon as they show too much interest in him or want to play."
His health and energy levels are great. He is eating well, without any human food supplement. He seems to be filling out somewhat; we will see what his weight gain is on Monday.
Liam is a typical Kerry – very loving but also prone to dominance if given a chance (see bed discussion above). He will need training with his new adopters to become the wonderful Kerry companion we know.
January 11, 2016 Update
Liam is still up for adoption. He is fostered in Ottawa, Ontario and would welcome enquiries from experienced Kerry owners willing to help a typical adolescent boy settle into a new home. Liam has been neutered and is in great health. He will give you lots of opportunity to get off the couch as he is great at fetch and going for walks. Liam is friendly with other dogs but is still shy of new exposures. He spent the first two years of his life loved but quite sheltered by his elder owner. Please consider giving Liam a chance to be the wonderful Kerry companion he wants to be.
February 1, 2016 Update
Liam has moved to Edmonton, Alberta into a foster-to-adopt home. He has adapted very nicely, so far, and we are hopeful this will be the end of the road to a forever home for a great dog.
