Halley rescued from the mill.

She was in a fight with another animal.

...our beautiful little girl, Halley!! (...short for "Hallelujah, I've Been Saved")...

Rescued from an Amish puppy mill, Halley, arrived today thanks to the Kerry Blue Terrier Foundation. She's absolutely adorable- very inquisitive, loves "loves" (even Gumpy's silly squeaks), and seems to be very happy in her new home!

Halley is settling in beautifully. I am recovering from knee surgery so we have plenty of time together for pats and hugs. She is catching on to eating out of a bowl, going potty outside ( my living room is not a barn!) and getting used to unfamiliar mechanical noises. She is also, very cautiously, getting used to my husband's pats and treats ( he who has a beard and must somehow remind her of her former life in an Amish puppy mill).

She has had a bath and a pedicure, a first visit to the vet and a car ride to visit some of our family. All of the above went really well. Her poor raccoon-chewed nose is healing beautifully and her hair is growing back nicely. In another month or so she should look much more Kerry-like. As I write this she has her front paws on my right knee and is trying to put her head on the keyboard so I will give her scratches instead of typing!

She has enriched our lives more than I ever dreamed possible.

Please be aware of how scared and how clever our rescued dogs are:

I cannot believe our Ohio rescue girl, Halley. We have been putting her in the bathroom with her bed, a piddle pad, my socks and a bowl of water if we have to leave her alone for awhile and it seemed to have worked. Not today. We went to our Kiwanis meeting and..............she released a locked bathroom window, destroyed the screen, jumped from the toilet to the windowsill and then to the ground (via the air conditioner?) She then crawled under a 6" space under the fence and took off. Thank God for a wonderful dog lover ( and rescuer) who saw her running in the street about 1 1/2 miles away from our house, stopped, called her and got her into her van. She then called me to tell me she had Halley.
When I finish hugging her I'm "going to kill her". (This was just as worrisome as when my kids were teenagers and came home late. First you think they have been killed in a car accident and then you are so relieved and then angry when they finally show up!)

Thanks for letting me vent.

Linda

Last night Halley had a "sleep-over" with our dog-loving daughter, Jen and her family. Halley visited our grand kid's charter school in Novato, CA yesterday and was a HUGE hit....very friendly and well-behaved. Jen and Halley are doing a great job of advertising the Kerry Foundation because all the kids love her and the moms want to know what breed she is because she is so beautiful (her hair is finally growing back) and she is "the perfect size for a house dog". We refer them to the Internet site and tell them about the Ohio rescue and the availability of adoptions.

P.S. Altho' she still is very easily startled she is almost completely housebroken, knows "sit", is learning "stay", and is great on a leash. My gosh she is so smart.....brag, brag, brag!!!! Our almost six year old grandson wants to come over after kindergarten every day to see the "little one". Our whole family is so in love with our girl.

Look at Halley's nose!!!! She's beginning to look like a proper Kerry!

She has settled in beautifully. She walks well on leash, is about 90% housebroken ( or maybe I am!), loves all the grand kids., and follows me all over the house like a shadow. She is still very timid around Herb when he is standing, but will come over for scratches if he is sitting down.

I can't believe how she has enriched our lives.

Our fabulous Halley (the former Sal #9) has turned into a beautiful young lady (she turned 2 on July 2 ). We have worked closely with a trainer (thank you, Eileen for the recommendation) to improve her socialization skills. She'll never be a jump -in- your -lap, face -licker to strangers but now she sits quietly at my side when visitors come. She has warmed up v-e-r-y s-l-o-w-l-y to Herb but we're getting there.

She had her first Kerry trim a couple weeks ago and she is now a proper Kerry Blue, fall and all! You would never recognize her from the shorn, bare- nosed little girl that came into our lives four months ago.

I can't thank enough all the people involved in her rescue to bring her into our lives. We are so grateful.

Halley's fall keeps growing.

This is a recent photo of Halley with her favorite toy...a hedgehog. She is actually on doll #2 because the first one got chewed to death! (She has finally learned how to play.) She is "graduating" from obedience school this Thursday . She doesn't do well in class because of all the other dogs around, but she has picked up the skills repeated at home in a flash. (Brag, brag...she is a very quick learn.) She has finally accepted Herb, the bearded one in our house, jumping up to greet him in the morning, rolling over to get her tummy scratched, giving him Kerry Kisses. As I type this she is peacefully lying at my feet.

What a joy to have this wonderful friend join our family. I'll never be able to thank her rescuers enough.

Our rescue girl's third birthday is 07/07/07!!! She is now three and getting better by the month. She still has issues with other dogs and adult males (of the human species), but we keep working on it. I LOVE her so much!
Cheers and thanks to the Foundation.

Happy second anniversary to the Great Ohio Rescue (and I what I call Halley's other birthday)! Our girl is looking good. She still has dog aggression and adult male issues which we continue to work on with the help of her obedience trainer. In spite of all that we love her to bits!

Altho she will be 5 in July, March 7th is Halley's 3rd anniversary as a "free girl" after the Great Ohio Rescue. And has she come a L-O-N-G way in her recovery to being a normal dog. She still has "issues" with unfamiliar adult males (take your hat off when you come in, please!). And she is also very dog aggressive except tor her new boyfriend, Cuervo! He is a bulldog owned by her groomer, Melissa, who also is my dog sitter when we go out of town. Melissa reports that when Halley lies down on the ottoman Cuervo sleeps on the sofa with his chin on her shoulder!!

She is also very vocal. (I love reading your Kerry Lister notes because I recognize so many traits described that are so like Halley.) If she is not sitting at my feet she is standing on the sofa, paws on the window sill commenting on the passers-by....woof, woof, hmmmmm and then sing!!!

So, again I thank her rescuers for bringing her to us.
