In 1973 a new autoimmune disease was diagnosed in German Shepherds. The disease has been recognized for more than 35 years as a spontaneously occurring, spinal cord disorder in dogs. It was called “Degenerative Myelopathy” (DM) and it was believed to affect these dogs between 5 and 14 years of age.

Some medical researchers theorize that this disease is similar to Multiple Sclerosis in humans.

In late June 1998 we noticed, our 10 1/2 year old Kerry, Pebbles dragging her left rear foot as she walked across the kitchen floor. Nothing much, just a slight scrape, but enough that Lucy said ,"Pebbles must need her nails
trimmed because I can hear her nails on the floor.
