Male #134, Sullivan (a.k.a Kona)
March 30, 2006
On the short walk from my family room to the carport door, this 3-year-old
"puppy" has shown interest in, chewed, or picked up and carried
a hiking boot, an extra leash, and my slipper! None of those soft stuffed
toys for him! We are redirecting his attention (and his mouth!) to a kong
type toy with treats inside to satisfy his puppy-like curiosity. Koa is
good with other dogs and cats, and is very responsive to attention, hugs,
pats and scratches, and all the love you can give him. He is adventurous,
quick to learn, and an absolute sweetheart.

Sullivan was scooped up in Calgary by his new owners Jan Farquhar and Dan
Simeone from Great Falls, MT. Sullivan is a happy, outgoing boy, and they
all love each other to bits. He likes to read the Sunday paper in bed with
Mom (do they get breakfast in bed, too?), and rip out all the ads. All is
good. :-)

Jan Farquhar has just sent me this video clip of Sullivan.
He looks happy!
Here's hoping all the rescues adapt as well.

In the spring of 2006, the Shelbina rescue brought 34 dogs from a puppy
mill
- our largest rescue. Four of those dogs came to Canada for fostering and
placement.
#134, Koa, born November 14, 2002 was the sweetest, calmest boy and everyone
fell in love with him. He was scared of men and many new things, but his
temperament was outstanding. He was so loving and sweet to humans and calm
around other dogs.
Koa was adopted by Jan and Dan Simeone and changed his name to Sullivan
(Sully). When Sully joined their home, Dan had to lie down on the floor
so
that Sully would come over to him. Lying in bed to read brought Sully over
with kisses and much love, but whenever Dan stood up, Sully would cringe
and
hide. Maureen, another Kerry from a Missouri mill and of Russian pedigree,
joined the family later that year. Mo helped Sully accept his new life
outside of the puppy mill and since 2006, Sully has grown into the most
wonderful pet that Jan & Dan could imagine.
In the last while, Sully had blood showing in his stool. No cause was found
after many vet visits and diet restrictions. Then last week he started
vomiting blood. The vet thought he had a stomach ulcer and tried
medications to stabilize Sully. He spent this last weekend at the vet's
house on IV, with a temperature, and no let up in the passing of blood.
At
1:30 this afternoon he passed away.....only moments before Jan and Dan were
able to get there to say goodbye. Mo is wandering the house looking for
Sully. She wanted to sniff the collar Jan brought home. As Jan said "
there's a big empty hole in our home"
We are all heartbroken that Sully had to leave us. He was an amazing
example of the resilience of puppy mill dogs and the wish we all have that
they can live normal happy lives in family's homes. I'm sure you will all
join me in wishing Jan & Dan peace and love as they grieve for the loss
of a
wonderful dog.
