Foxes, Coyotes and Kerry Blue Terriers
Summarized from a discussion on KerryBlues-L
by Shelley Kilcoyne
To what extent are foxes and coyotes a threat to a fenced-in
Kerry?
- Foxes generally are not perceived as being much of a threat
to a full-grown Kerry.
- Coyotes, on the other hand, can be.
- Coyotes are capable of scaling fences and have been known
to attack Kerries and other dogs of similar size with, in some
cases, disastrous results.
- A Kerry MAY be capable of taking on a coyote (and have been
known to kill them) depending, I would guess, on the relative
sizes and aggressiveness of each.
Suggestions to prevent attacks were:
- get a gun;
- get a Great Pyr or other large dog
- and to walk along the property and touch railings to make
sure the coyote detects a human scent.
