- How to count points in the AKC system.
This link to the AKC website explains how the AKC tracks points earned
in conformation classes. The AKC championship point schedule is based
on a formula that takes into account the average number of dogs of
a particular breed being shown in a particular region over the past
three years, excluding specialties. Each AKC region includes approximately
100 dog shows. Only the top 18 or 20% of all breed entries can be
considered "majors," and the AKC only wants 2% of breed
entries to be 5 point majors. Point schedules are revised every year,
and the updated schedules become effective every May. The current
point
schedule for all breeds is published on the AKC website.
