Job Openings

No, these jobs don't pay money. No Foundation jobs pay money. However, you will be rewarded with the knowledge you are doing something positive for the breed. By joining a select group of Kerry fanciers, you will work for the betterment of the breed. The Foundation is not beholden to any Kerry breeder club and is above all club politics. You need not be a member of any Kerry club; you only need a willingness to work, and work hard.

You can quit these jobs at any time, so please try them - you may like them.

Rescue Coordinator

A Rescue Coordinator is the hub of the rescue operation.

Rescue Coordinators report to the Rescue Director and work very closely with Shelter Scouts and Foster Families.

Rescue Coordinators help the Shelter Scouts ID shelter dogs and recover them if they are Kerries. They work with shelters, as well as owners relinquishing their Kerries, to take possession of the dog, arrange veterinary care and foster care, screen potential adopters, place the dog in a permanent home, and provide follow-up support.

Rescue Coordinators work in their geographic areas and should have some experience with placing Kerries.

Rescue Coordinators have a 24/7 job and must be able to react fast and make decisions, often based on limited information, to ensure the safety of the dog. Impeccable people skills and dedication are a must.

The job can be both emotionally and physically draining. You may encounter dogs in advanced states of neglect, in deteriorating health, or people who don't care, or who have heartbreaking stories to tell. Yet this job gives
you an opportunity to improve--or save--the life of one or more Kerries every year, and make a real contribution to the breed. You will also earn the appreciation of the new Kerry owner and the Kerry community.

Few people will volunteer for this bittersweet and difficult job, but it has to be done if we truly want to protect this breed of ours.

A signed Rescue Coordinator Agreement, which describes all the responsibilities, is required. (Agreement: .pdf)

If you want to be an important part of this Rescue team, please contact our Rescue Director, Janet Joers at jjoers@kerryblues.info or 805/686-0809. (CA)

Foster Homes

Must be willing to accept a temporary Kerry in your house. Some Kerries may have physical problems and or behavior issues that need to be addressed. Foster Homes will be called upon to transport Kerries, and may be asked to help screen homes.

Foster care can last a few hours to a few months. Many Foundation foster homes may rarely actually foster a Kerry; however, they must be ready to jump into action on short notice.

The Foundation does extensive screening on foster homes. A signed Foster Family Agreement is required. (Agreement: .pdf)

Shelter Scout

Many Kerry clubs have rescue programs that can place Kerries in need. Few of these clubs actively search for Kerries who need help. The Foundation is trying to fill this void.

The Kerry Blue Terrier Foundation has developed a set of software tools that help Shelter Scouts systematically search for Kerries in shelters.

We are looking for a select number of volunteers, called "Shelter Scouts" who will be allowed access to our private database of shelters. These Shelter Scouts must have high-speed internet access and be willing to regularly scan web sites in search for Kerries.

These Shelter Scouts will be trained by the Foundation to
- run the software,
- identify a Kerry or kerry-mix,
- know what to do next.

Shelter Scouts will usually scan sites of local shelters, but not always. A scout in Colorado could scan shelters in New York. The software keeps track of all scans to avoid duplication.

Sometimes Shelter Scouts will bail out the Kerry, arrange a vet check, and place it in a foster home. Working as a Shelter Scout is emotionally draining, frustrating and extremely time-critical. But saving the life of one Kerry is worth far more than an hour or two a week watching TV.

A signed Shelter Scout Agreement is required. (Agreement: .pdf)

If you want to be part of this elite team of Shelter Scouts, please contact our Program Director, Dianne Ewing (dewing1221@charter.net) (SC)

Kerry Mentor

The Foundation receives many calls and e-mails from potential Kerry owners. The Foundation will provide the names and phone numbers of people requesting information to a Kerry Mentor. A Kerry Mentor answers their questions or sends them to the appropriate page on the web site.

Pet Store Scouts

While the Foundation does NOT purchase Kerries from pet stores at market value, we do have a program that serves both the pet store Kerries and their new owners.

If you live in the US, are willing to give a few hours each week and drop everything in an emergency, I want to talk to you. When you volunteer to help, you will be trained and provided with materials and support. However, your only reward is the knowledge you did the right thing.
